Checking things off…
…the Summer Bucket List that is! You saw that I already made it to Union Market. Well, I made it to and outdoor movie and to a brewery. The Summer Bucket List is being checked off one by one and it’s been a lot of fun.
My friend and I went to the NoMa outdoor movie last Wednesday which was showing The Princess Bride, which is definitely one of my favorites. (If you haven’t seen it, please watch it right now, thank you.) The weather was absolutely gorgeous – we could not have asked for a more perfect night. While they blew up the inflatable screen we enjoyed the scene, waited in a massive line for food trucks and just took in all in. It ended up being a really big crowd – a couple of hundred or so – and the crowd totally got into the movie later which was great. The energy and everyone clapping during fight scenes and saying quotes along to the movie was really fun. We also enjoyed a few beers along with everyone else which was a nice little perk. I would definitely go to another outdoor movie and would really do NoMa again too because of the location.
Yesterday, before I celebrated DC Pride, a friend and I headed to Alexandria to do a brewery tour and tasting at Port City Brewing. We hopped in our Zipcar and headed across the Potomac for a quick drive. The brewery is pretty small but it had a cool family vibe to it. The tasting room is funky with two bars. We walked in and signed up for the 2pm tour and received our tasting glasses (which we got to bring home!) and our drink tickets. The first beer is on the house and then you get 5 refills. I had two free tickets for a tour/tasting, but I think the regular price is $9, so it’s really a great deal. Check out the website for more info!
The tour lasted about half an hour and was hosted by two employees who told us some history about the brewery and D.C. breweries in general and explained the grain to glass process. It was interesting to learn about – we tasted some grain, smelled some hops – and just saw the whole process broken down. Afterwards we tasted a few more beers before hitting the road. There was a food truck outside that seemed to be producing some pretty delicious snacks that people were eating – good to know for next time!
So let’s take a look at how my Summer Bucket List is coming along. I know it’s only June, but I think I’m doing a pretty good job so far. I’ve tried to go to the National Building Museum for the Backyard BBQ twice but the weather won’t comply! I’ll get there 🙂 I went to the Jersey shore over Memorial Day weekend and have a longer trip planned with family to go back over the 4th so the beach trips are off to a good start. Maybe I’ll even make it more than three times!
