1. I went to BikerBarre this morning and got my spin on! My friend Allison is an instructor there and I finally got to take one of her classes. She totally kicked my butt and started my Friday off right with a great sweat session. I think it was her “guilty pleasures” playlist that really gave the workout an extra edge. Music makes SUCH a huge difference in spin class and I found myself singing along this morning and really enjoying the tunes.
The best part of working out at BikerBarre are the cold, scented towels they give you post-workout. They smell amazing and are the perfect way to cool down after a hardcore sweat session. Seriously, I love them.
I was happy to give their spin classes a try after my not so stellar experience with their barre classes earlier this year. I think they’ve found their groove and are totally killing it on the Hill. If you live in the DC area and haven’t been, go check out their classes here.
2. I am currently dog sitting the cutest dog ever. Yup, I said that. She is absolutely adorable and she’s finally warming up to me. We totally snuggled in bed last night and then she surprised me in the shower this morning when she poked her head in to say hello. We’re best buds, what can I say? Dog sitting really makes me want to get a dog. Like a lot. Sigh. I can’t wait to go and see her at our lunch time walk.
3. I slept through my alarm on Thursday and woke up 15 minutes before Bar Method. I had to call and cancel because I never would have made it in time, even in a cab. I was pretty bummed but what can you do? I think making it to three early morning workouts during the work week is pretty good if you ask me.
4. Addy and I are hitting the road for a work trip tomorrow and the blog will be on radio silence for the next 7-10 days. I feel like I’ve been packing forever. We hope you’ll miss us 🙂
5. I am currently carrying around a blackberry and TWO iPhones. Don’t ask.
Happy Friday/Labor Day/Next Week!
Thursday’s workout: Slept through Bar Method – eek!
Thursday’s meals highlight: Dinner at a friend’s house and she made this amazing meal with shrimp, salmon and veggies over rice. So good!
Friday’s workout: 45 minute spin class
Here is what my last week of eating has looked like.
I made these fries on Sunday and while they were good, I needed to use more seasoning and probably even could have cooked them longer for more crispiness.
I attempted my own siracha mayo and it wasn’t that good, but thankfully I think I’m going to Good Stuff today to get my fix!
Justin and I were on a major naan pizza kick last week and had it three days in a row. Here is my creation from last week. Note the fresh basil from our basil plant!
On Wednesday night, I wanted to eat any thing that was greasy, cheesy or fried near me, so Justin and I went to Public Tenley and ordered a meal full of appetizers. Which included these philly cheese steak nachos.
And finally, a picture from Stephanie and my date on Monday! I really liked Protein Bar and think it is a fun easy option for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I do want to try some of their other bowls and salads again soon.

Remember when I made some faux Buffalo chicken macaroni and cheese? Well a bunch of people asked for the recipe and I don’t have one because I am not what you would call a stellar cook in the kitchen. But I did find one that I wanted to share. And no, it’s not from Pinterest. It’s from one of my favorite bloggers over at How Sweet It Is. I mean all of her recipes are to die for but I will have to hunker down at some point and whip this one up because, hello, it’s Baked Buffalo Chicken Pasta! Or if someone could just come over with this already made I’ll provide the wine and entertainment. Just an idea.
Baked Buffalo Chicken Pasta
1 pound pasta
3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cooked and cut into chunks
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 1/2 cups milk
4 ounces freshly grated monterey jack cheese (I used half a brick) + more for topping
1/3 cup freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese + more for topping
1/3 cup buffalo wing sauce
1/3 cup panko bread crumbs
salt and pepper to taste
for garnish: 3/4 cup chopped green onions, 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, 1/2 cup Gorgonzola cheese, additional buffalo wing sauce
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Prepare water for pasta and cook according to directions.
While pasta is cooking, heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the butter, and once it’s melted and bubbly add the flour. Whisk together to create a roux and cook for 1-2 minutes until mixture gets a bit golden in color. Add milk, stir and turn down heat to low. Continue stirring until milk thickens. Add in grated cheeses and continue to stir until mixture is smooth. Stir in buffalo wing sauce. Taste and season with salt and pepper if needed.
Spray a baking dish (9 x 13 is fine, I used a round 4-inch deep dish) with non-stick spray. Add pasta and chicken, then pour cheese sauce over and mix thoroughly until everything is coated. Sprinkle with additional grated cheese and bread crumbs. Bake for 25 minutes or until cheese is golden brown. Remove from oven and immediately top with Gorgonzola, green onions and cilantro. Drizzle with buffalo wing sauce.

You guys, I had a super hot date last night. Can you guess who it was with?
If you guessed Addy, then you are correct 🙂
We ventured out post-work to a new place called Protein Bar for dinner. It’s a chain that started in Chicago and the first D.C. location just opened up last week. Their mission is to provide great on-the-go food choices with a positive attitude. Sounds good to me!
I opted for a salad and it was seriously delicious. I went for the Southwest Salad which had the following: All-natural chicken, organic quinoa, seasoned black beans, shredded cheddar cheese, fresh avocado, tomatoes, and Cholula sauce over our Super 6 Salad Mix. And that dollop of fresh avocado was a BIG one. I also added some more Cholula because I like my salads spicy!
I wish Protein Bar were closer to work so we could have it more often. Not only do they have salads but they have burritos and bowls that all looked so good. Addy has a bowl that just looked like warm goodness on a spoon. It also looked like they has some great breakfast options on their menu as well.
In true blogger fashion we headed to the nearest fro-yo shop after dinner and had a cup of some sweet goodness. Even though we served ourselves, got different flavors and had different toppings our cups were the exact same price! $2.94! Isn’t that bizarre?
While I managed to bring a week’s worth of oatmeal and granola bars to work (and my lunch salad) I forgot all my fruit – aka a banana and an apple. I need my fruity snacks!

This weekend was filled with rolling highs and lows:
High: I successfully made this Pioneer Woman recipe for a friend’s birthday.
Low: My carry on suitcase I’ve owned since 2004 broke in half. Luckily I scored a new one at TJ Maxx before my work trip next week (phew!).
High: My friend and I made this delicious recipe from Gina for lunch on Saturday. It’s going to have to be a summer staple forever now.
Low: I didn’t run outside this weekend. Oops. But I did end up running almost 5 miles on Friday night during my interval workout on the treadmill. That counts as run if you ask me 😉
High: I ate salads on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They weren’t conventional salads but I’m still counting them. On Friday night I made the last of the buffalo chicken lettuce wraps but instead of wraps, I made a big salad with the lettuce, chicken, cheese and carrots. On Saturday, I”m counting that tasty crab salad I mentioned above and on Sunday I made a random lentil salad by just throwing things together that were in my fridge. Success, if you ask me!
Low: My email has been spammed ALL weekend by people trying to subscribe or unsubscribe from the Drive By Truckers mailing list. Clearly they are having a problem and it seems like they’ve fixed it now but nothing like hundreds of extra emails in your inbox to start your morning every day.
High: I went to Bar Method on Saturday and this morning. It totally kicked my butt and I’m loving it. So good to be back! Tuck, tuck, tuck, tuck.
Ok, so maybe more highs than lows 🙂
With a week long work trip looming ahead and a busy week this week, I want to be sure to fit in some good workouts and I’m looking at the mornings to fit them in. I’m also compiling some great no-equipment workouts for while I’m on the road next week hoping to squeeze them in here and there. Here’s my SIDI for the week:
Monday – Bar Method
Tuesday – Rest
Wednesday – Bar Method
Thursday – Bar Method
Friday – Spin?
Saturday – Rest
Sunday – Run
Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Monday’s meals highlights: Too soon to tell, I have delicious leftovers for lunch but Addy and I are going out to try a new restaurant tonight for dinner. Yum.
So I finally found what I think is the perfect gym bag for me. I ordered it on eBay for $25 with free shipping, so it was a good deal in my book! It’s the Puma Fitness Workout Bag – come check it out!
There is just something so exciting about finding what you’re looking for in a product. The one thing it doesn’t have is an over the shoulder strap but oh well. I think I’ll survive 🙂
The Y is closing tomorrow for a week long annual cleaning. I need to change up my SIDI for the week a bit! I also totally splurged and bought a 5 class package to The Bar Method. I couldn’t help myself, it’s been too long. I’m not ready to get back into running (even though I’ll have to come September 10 and I’m planning on a short run on Sunday) and didn’t want to slack off a full week so I figured early morning Bar is the perfect way to get my workout on. First class is tomorrow morning – can’t wait!
Monday – Zumba (check!)
Tuesday – Rest (check!)
Wednesday – Spin + Body Pump (check!)
Thursday – Rest (check!)
Friday – Treadmill workout
Saturday – Bar Method
Sunday – 3 mile run
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Work has been all consuming of my time, no complaints, it’s just made it hard for me to focus on writing a blog post!
I’ve pretty much stuck to the August salad challenge (on weekdays only of course), but only have one picture from this week to share. This salad is from Sweetgreen which was a nice change from the boring cafeteria salad I normally have.
I went to the Nationals game on Tuesday night. I specifically wanted to go to this game because Strasburg was pitching and they were playing the Braves who are not far behind them in the race to the playoffs. I read this morning that Straburg’s last start might come on September 19! I’ve also been wanting to buy a Bryce Harper tee but had never seen one that I liked, but finally I saw a nice women’s tee that I can now call my own.
We are going to a wedding this weekend and I was informed there is mashed potato bar before dinner is even served. I’m not sure how I’m even going to eat dinner because I will likely have eaten my weight in mashed potatoes. When I asked Justin more specifics, he couldn’t give me any. Mainly my concern was, will there be cheesy potatoes to enjoy. I’ll have a full report next week.
Speaking of food, I still have so much zucchini from my parents garden and have not made any more zucchini bread, so I have to find ways to incorporate it when I make dinner. I haven’t yet made any zucchini boats, but have at least been thinking about it. Last night, I just made some quinoa, zucchini, tomato, pesto and sirracha. It was light and refreshing!
Happy Friday everybody and have a wonderful weekend!

What is it about summer that makes it so hard to stay on track with a healthy diet? The BBQs? The warm weather that makes you want to have a cold beer after work? The weddings? Yes, yes, I think for me it was all the weddings. While I loved every wedding I attended, there is no denying that they are the perfect occasion to indulge in delicious food and copious amounts of alcohol. As summer starts to wrap up, I’m finding myself trying to get back into a good routine during the week (because I still have plenty of weekend travel ahead of me this fall) and for me that’s packing my breakfast and lunch every day and have healthy, easy dinner options ready at home. And of course, staying on point. For any of you who have ever done Weight Watchers, you know what that means 🙂
So what did I end up eating? Pretty much everything! I knew I had a big workout ahead of me (spin and Body Pump) so I needed to fuel up all day.
I didn’t take a picture of my gala apple that was consumed around 3:00pm or my three egg whites and Babybel that were consumed around 5:30pm (some workout fuel!).
Last night’s workout was a doozy but it felt good to be back at the gym again at classes. Spin was a little different last night and we spent the majority of class doing big old intervals and then ended with three short sprints. The class went by quickly but it was definitely more challenging. I should have had a snack in the 15 minutes of downtime between classes because I was definitely feeling weak in the first half of Body Pump. I used light weights since I haven’t lifted in months and just took my time, taking breaks when I needed to. I have to say, it felt great to be back at Body Pump.

1. I bought light-blocking, noise-reducing curtains for my bedroom and they have changed my life. My bedroom now gets PITCH BLACK and I swear I’m getting better sleep from it. Two years late, but still awesome.
2. I did not eat a salad on Saturday or Sunday….
3. But I did on Monday (two in fact!) and today.
4. My day late “Say It, Do It” list, inspired by Jess:
Monday – Zumba (check!)
Tuesday – Rest
Wednesday – Spin + Body Pump
Thursday – Swim or treadmill interval workout
Friday – Spin
Saturday – Zumba + Body Pump
Sunday – Spin? Swim? Run? Bike?
5. I attended the cutest bridal shower on Saturday. The details were amazing and it was so much fun.
6. I made Gina’s Crock Pot Buffalo Chicken Lettuce Wraps last night. They were super easy! I’m planning on having them tonight with a friend for dinner. I’m going to serve some sweet potato fries on the side. Mmm, this is making me hungry…
7. I need to use my crock pot more, it’s just SO easy.
8. I finally bought a hand mixer. Bring on the baking!
9. The cooler morning weather has been AMAZING. I wish it would stick around all day. Fall, is that you?
10. I can’t wait to see my family in September. It’s been too long and sometimes you just need some family time.
Monday’s workout: Zumba
Monday’s meals highlights: Both salads, they were delicious and totally hit the spot!
I actually don’t really have anything fashion related for today. So, let’s talk about other stuff.
Last night I finally got back on the workout saddle and went to the gym for the 7pm spin class. When I walked in there were four other people there but no instructor. A few minutes went by and the other attendees starting talking about how an instructor didn’t show the past two weeks. From the sound of it, it seems like there was a great instructor who regularly taught and then had to leave and they never really replaced him. Well, we were all there, clipped in, and we decided to just make up our own class. One of the woman ran and got her iPod and plugged it in and then we decided that we would just rotate songs and each “teach” a few. It was pretty funny but I still got a great workout. We didn’t do the full hour, we did 45 minutes, including a cool down and stretching.
No one hopped up into the instructor bike because that’s apparently not allowed so we just called the cues from our own bikes. I ended up “teaching” three songs and seriously had no idea what I was doing but just winged it! I did one song that was just a slow, steady climb up a hill and we just kept increasing our resistance. I did another song that was a mix of some combinations – 2nd, 3rd, seated, etc. And then my last song was sprints! We did a 2 minute sprint, 1 minute rest, 1 minute sprint, 30 seconds rest, and then a 30 second sprint into the final song. I had to say, it was fun! And we were all working really hard and motivating each other to keep pushing throughout our “class.” Maybe I should look into becoming a fitness instructor? Hmmm.
I am so happy it’s Friday. I’m heading down to Richmond this weekend for a friend’s bridal shower. I’m excited for the trip and to see her and just hang out.
I am excited for all the bloggers at the Healthy Living Summit this weekend in Boston. I am sad not to be there and really want to attend next year. I can’t wait to keep up with tweets and read all the recaps!
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
